Prep and Painting Methods for Metal Parts?

    Hi everyone,

As I wait for more parts to come in for my suspension overhaul I have removed the front passenger side strut assembly. While it's out, seems like a good opportunity to clean it up and refresh it with some new paint (as well as any other parts that make sense while I am in here).

I've never painted metal car parts like this so wondering if anyone has some tips on how I should go about cleaning, prepping, and painting these parts?

Also looking for opinions on brands and materials too.

While all of this is out of the car, does anyone see benefit to coating the wheel wells with something like POR 15 or other rubberized undercoating?

    Thanks,
    Clint

To clean you want to use a heavy duty degreaser, like purple power. To prep them, use some sand paper, 80 grit, then like 120 grit. 3M makes good sand paper. For painting them, it depends on your budget. You can get some engine enamel spray paint which works really good at your local automotive store. As for your wheel wells, go for it, just make sure its clean and degreased.

You really don't need to sand that much and engine enamel isn't needed (suspension parts don't get hot). I suggest using a scotch bright pad to scuff the surface up a bit, then hit them with what ever brand rattle can you prefer. I usually use Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer then their Satin Black over the top. Never had a problem. Definitely get them clean first though. Paint doesn't stick to dirt/grime.

From my experience with spray cans, engine enamel lasts the longest.
