My e30 has the shittiest paint you could possibly imagine. Almost no rust except some surface rust in certain areas. I am 16 and don't have much money to spend painting it. Maaco quoted me $940 for rust/paint. I can afford this but I am not sure I really want a maaco paint job, you know? I was wondering how crazy it would be to just buy a compressor, paint gun, etc and do it myself. This way I could repaint it whenever I want as long as I have free time and money for paint. My dad would also appreciate the compressor. Should I save up for a quality job (don't really want to do this as I only make like $800/month and paintjobs cost $2000+, right?), go with maaco, or buy all the shit and do it myself? Thanks, alternative suggestions are also welcome.
Crazy Idea?

Keep in mind that if you do buy a compressor, spray gun, air hose, respirator etc. It will still cost you $400 plus for the paint, hardener, primer , tape, sandpaper and stuff. Auto body supplies aren't cheap.sigpicComment

I didn't actually know the exact figure but I figured it would be quite expensive. . . The only thing is though, even if I get finished with the job costing more than a maaco one (which I am expecting), I will end up with a compressor, paint gun, etc etc. So every subsequent time I need to paint something it would only cost $400 for supplies. Plus, a compressor would be really useful around my house for other shit too, so I figure my dad would most likely chip in on that. I am really leaning towards doing this myself :)Comment

If you want a nice paint job for less than retail, here is what to do: grab your local yellow pages and look up "Auto Body Supplies" and head down to the nearest one.
Ask the person behind the counter (unless they seem like a dick, then try somewhere else) if they know someone who paints cars (don't be a retard about it, of fucking COURSE they do, you are in a goddamn paint store!) for decent prices.
Call that person and work some magic. Offer up your older sister, your single aunt, whatever. Tell him you can sweep floors, or sand, or scrub parts, whatever.
Good luck!

From what I understand, hot rod guys get good deals on painting. They are all "out of pocket" customer pay - unlike a collision center is all where it is all expensive insurance pay. Makes a difference.Originally posted by Matt-Bhey does anyone know anyone who gets upset and makes electronics?Comment

I do sugest doing it yourself. HOWEVER, do remember, this is A LOT of work. Painting a car is not simple matter, especially if you are doing it for the first time. Lucky for me, I had an experienced friend help me along with my first job.
So, I say DIY. Just make sure you are prepared for all of the monotonous prep work. Painting will most likely take up only about 10% of the time.
If you can do all the prep work and then find someone to just shoot it for cheap, thats even beter.Comment
