How do I get this dent out?

I have a dent, in the back and it's a little tough to pound out. I've never really pounded a dent out before, would it be possible to get it out with a slide hammer?

The rust isn't a problem, I just want the body to line up with the bumper again.

I think the person who owned it before me got rear ended and just threw a new bumper on.

This is kind of a tricky repair, but no doubt possible. I would recommend taking off the bumper to give you more space to work with. Then, remove the paint from the damaged area with some 36 grit. Next you will want to hammer it close to its original shape using the pick end of a body hammer. You dont want to hammer too much, keep it low so when you put bondo on it the metal doesnt stick out. I could get a lot more into detail if you would like.

See how bad the rust is, if not too bad as in just surface rust, just sand it off.

I had the same spot, what I did was place a 2x4 on the dent inside the trunk then used a large hammer on it. The wood will straighten out the panel for the most part without making a lot of small dents.

After you straighten it it still may not be perfect, that is when you sand and bondo to a nice smooth finish. Primer then paint.
