    matte black?

my clear coat is comming off, and my hood is practically matte already
anyone think sanding the whole car, then applying matte clear coat is a bad idea?
my car is diamondschwartz and the cost of a respray is killing me. 4k done professionally at a shop... sanding it would cost me nothing but sand paper and clear coat
i was thinking of doing the hood only, and seeing how it came out

    tell me what you think

Same boat on a different project. I've done the clear from a can from pep boys. did not like the finish. i could understand why people pay $$ to have it done by guys who do this for a living. for me everything came out uneven on the hood. the fender was so-so. i'd pay a professional to do it if you really need the car done right. you can always try it and strip it later.

anyone know of a decent (less expensive) paint job in southern cali?

borrow a 15+ gallon compressor, buy a hvlp gun, and a the clear. Practice a little first to get even coats. Remember lighter is better or it will run. Just read up on how to do it online.

I did this with the cheap rustoleum industrial paint from lowes for 20 bucks a gallon and thinned it to spray. I used a a gallon of red and mixed in a little black. Looked nice for a single stage and only cost me like 70 bucks with the gun. wish I still had pics.

or find an autobody school and have them do it.

I think using matte clear coat is an excellent idea. You have to be very careful when sanding it down though. Dont start with anything under 1200grit.

Getting a college to do it will be the best/cheapest way. Just pay for paint and materials and the teacher and student take care of the rest.
