Painting car!! Got a question

I want to paint my car Blitz Black, but my local JD dealer here in Charlotte said they discontinued the paint in gallon form (available in rattle cans..ew).

Can anyone recommend me a good satin/matte black paint?

I'm a fan of Rustoleum, but I have absurdly low standards for looks. It wet sands nicely and if the car's moving, nobody can tell the difference...unless they're going the same speed next to you.

I'm using rustoleum satin black right now on a bumper skin. I need to take it out in the sunlight, but i think it looks 'not very satin' compared to the Blitz Black.

I didn't go with blitz black because it's designed to be cleanable, which means it's really hard to get paint to stick to it, and you would have to strip it off to repaint the car in the future.

I'm wondering if the blitz black can be rolled on instead of sprayed.

Technically, just about anything can be rolled on. I rolled on orange (Rustoleum) for my track car. It doesn't look like shit, but it doesn't look good. I wet sanded some of it to see how well it buffed out and I was surprised how nice it "cleans up", but it takes a lot of elbow grease. Rolling paint will make bubbles/texture that mean more work once it's dry.

An HVLP gun in a paint booth is the best option. High pressure guns do decent work as well, but will overspray all over the place. Roller paint in your back yard pretty much sucks (especially when you have to wet sand out bugs and grass), but usually winds up looking better than most rattle can jobs.

don't roll it....hvlyp spray guns are cheap as dirt and even a entry level one could produce a nicer finish than rollers would in a quarter of the time.

What kind of air compressor do you need to run an HVLP gun?

HVLP guns use MASSIVE amounts of air. Cheaper ones use more air than pricey ones. Unless you have a 3+ HP compressor and/or a 30+ gallon tank, I would rent or borrow a decent one.

I've had a 60 gallon 3HP 220volt setup keep up with an OK gun, but I've also had a 60 gallon 1.5 HP setup that worked with a little patience (spray for 30 seconds, drink beer for one minute, repeat).

So HVLP guns being cheap is a moot point if you dont own an adequate compressor.

Lots of things like how thinned out the paint is, temperature and humidity effect dry times. I painted in my back yard on a sunny day at around 75 degrees with a 30% thinned Rustoleum coat. Dry time was about an hour per coat.
