need info/tips on replacing front fender

My brother's 1991 325i Alpine white sedan was hit by a deer on the right front fender. It bent the fender and wrinkled the hood, but the frame and attachment points for the hood and fender do not appear to have been bent. I bought a used fender and hood in good condition off of an Alpine white car and will be installing them this weekend. Does anyone have any info or tips on how to align these pieces once I've fitted them on the car? I thought of using something to act as "shims" which transfers the gap widths from the left (good) side of the car to guide me on the proper gaps for the right side. Good or bad idea?

Any suggestions or thoughts are appreciated.

You can go buy a little jar of "tile shims" or "tile spacers" at home depot for a few bucks. Get the ones that are little wedges. You can put those between panels once its bolted up to ensure its spaced evenly. Then tighten everything and yank them out.
