School me on paint. Dupli-color valance

I decided to start my own thread to ask a few specific questions.

I am going to re-spray my valance. It is very rock chipped so it looks awful. It is black.

I want to do this cheaply. I only want it to last about a year because I will be getting the entire car painted once I move to a place with a bigger garage (currently sits outside).

I want to use local spray paint, I don't feel like ordering $25 cans of paint for a black car.

I was looking at dupli-color paint and here are my questions.

What paint should I use, enamel, lacquer, or "perfect match". What are the benifits of enamel or lacquer paints?

    Should I clear coat?

My process was going to be:
    1. red scotch brite with some sort of cleaner until it is "rough", while still keeping the stock paint there.

    2. paint multiple thin coats

    3. Should I clear coat?

    4. Wax.

Sorry for being a complete noob but I want this to be a quick process, while learning. I do NOT want to primer, it is just one more thing for me to mess up. Again, I am just wanting it to look better then it does now, nothing show worthy.

    Thanks!

From what I've heard you shouldn't wax fresh paint. Polishing is okay, but no wax for a while.

Good point, I have heard that too. I will hold off for a little bit before waxing.

I am most concerned with how it holds up. I would assume I would NEED to clear coat it if I want it to last a year.

What paint is stronger, enamel or lacquer?

Dupli-color offers a clear coat for their touch up spray paint, but I don't see a clear coat for the enamel stuff. I was thinking the touch up paint + clear would be my best bet.

well i dont really know enough about paint to tell u what paint is stronger.

            this is what i did.

            preped the bumper.
            primered.
            sanded
            dupli-color gloss black
            dupli-color clear coat

its been on there for almost 8 months, and theres no signs of it coming off

Did you sand during paint coats or clear coats? That is what I am most worried about. Is it just a very light wet sanding, then spray again?
