    Trouble with plastic bumper swap

I'm in the process of swapping a rear plastic bumper onto my car and it just won't fit.

My car is a '88 325iS, mfg 12/87. The bumper came off of what I believe was a '91 325i. I have a huge gap around the top of the bumper (atleast 3/8" all around) and the leading edges are about a 1/4" from the edge of the fender. I've tried the plastic cover with and without the side mounts in place and have the same problem each time. All of the clips along the bottom of the bumper are engaged as well as the two holder tabs on the inside edge of the bumper cover (holds the cover to the rebar). The cover is flush with the rebar in back.

I'm running out of ideas and this really looks like ass IMO. I picked up a few set screws and have entertained the idea of pushing in the bumper shocks a bit but would like to avoid this if possible. I took everything from the same car (cover, mounts, rebar, and shocks) and it mounted up just fine before removed.

Sounds like you have the wrong bumper shocks installed. You need ones made for the plastic bumper, not the 88 diving board ones.

The proper shocks came off of the car that everything was pulled from. I compared my shocks side to side with the ones that I pulled from the other car and mine are noticeably larger.

        Oldish thread but...

I'm in the process of mounting a rear plastic bumper and I'm having the exact same issue. Maybe using the old diving board shocks would remove the gap above the bumper?

I thought cabrios were supposed to be a direct swap :?

I drilled the shocks, got them to where they needed to be with a BFH, pulled the bumper cover and welded up the shocks.

For the sides I had to seriously alter the plastic mounting brackets.
