Cabrio Front bumper shocks for conversion

Hey everyone, I'm doing a bumper swap on my 90 cabrio and was wondering if I can either adjust my current bumper shocks or drill them out to get them to work. All of the posts I've read say that you need to replace the shocks with the FL ones so that everything will work.

Has anyone had any success with just compressing the original ones on the car?

Just curious if there are other options available.

Diving board bumper shocks are different than plastic bumper shocks. They mount differently, so it's not a matter of compressing, it's mounting. Which, it seems that it would be impossible to mount plastics on early model shocks.
