Can you have a controlled rusted look?

I kinda want to rust my hood and trunk of my e30 Im building. Is there a way to rust it, then sand it and clear coat it where it wont continue to rust? and would it look anything like this???

cause I think that car looks bad ass not to mention its turbo.

I would love to see more pics If you have done something like this to your car also. and then tell me what you did and how its holding up

Okay, you understand that that 5er was basically destined for the junker, right? It was given a new lease on life by turning it into a rat-rod project. It works, because the guy who owns it went all out. I don't know if you've seen the most recent pics, but it is now even more, ahem, unique.

That Z bothers me a bit because it looks like the rust wasn't really terrible; it could have been repaired fairly easily, but was instead let go to achieve this look. Not a fan of that one.

Cnotes: If the car is already a beater and such, go for it. It might look better than when it started. If it is a nice car, though, don't do it. There are other ways to make your car stand out from the crowd. Just my .02.

            What about this one

and second of all I know rust is bad I am just trying to see If there is a way to get the look with out having to worry about the metal deteriorating. Is there a rust paint?
            Or will clear coating work?

Sand it and let it go. Then rub diesel fuel on it. That's what they did to Rusty (the e28 you posted)

I'd throw some clear on it to seal it, but surface rust will actually protect the metal below. We've got a 55 Dodge that's all surface rust. No holes whatsoever.

hahaha, wow. not workin out for that e36 IMO. thatd be like putting ketchup on a $30 steak... its still a steak, but you shouldve saved your ketchup for a $5 steak, cause you look like an ass with too much extra cash.

                      Woah, hold on.

Why would you clear coat rust? Clear coat is to protect the paint. Paint and primer protects the metal. Point being, clear coating rust is useless. Spray some tire shine on it or something if you want it shinny, haha, jk. It is impossible to completely stop rust in its tracks, unless you chem. treat it(such as por15) or remove it. If you clear coat the rust, it will bubble and look much uglier than rust itself.

The easiest way to make it rust would be to sand it with a heavy grit profile like 36 and spray it with a hose. The water will sit in the small grooves and slowly create iron oxide. The water accelerates the process because iron+oxygen=iron oxide.

BTW, dont do it. Unless you know a lot about sanding and metal prep, and want a hideous looking hood...

Who gives a shit if you wanna do it, do it. Rust it and clear it.

IIRC they use cheap hardware store chemicals. You use a mixture of muratic acid(used to clean concrete) and hydrogen peroxide(the kind you buy at walmart)

Mix about 1 part acid to 2 parts peroxide. And remember to always "do as you 'otta, add acid to waaaaaater" - it's a chemistry thing, you don't need to know why, just do it.

If you get it on your skin, wash it off right away, but dont' worry, it's not going to eat into your or something. Wear a breathing mask (full $40 respiratory with filters) and of course do it out doors. The solution will work much better if it and the object is warm.

The acid is going to cost you $5, and the per-oxide another $4. There ya go, and $9 rusted hood.

Why would I tell you how they do it? Well, I figure that once people know how it's done, and even lazy high school kids will do it, then the fad will be over.

                              Enjoy.

Oh, and OP - go buy a fucking VW if you want to do this shit. You dive a BMW, start acting like it.
