    Recoating Duplicolor clear

    Hey,
I'm painting my valance with Duplicolor color match and was only able to get one thick coat of clear on before I ran out. I would ideally like a few more layers on so I can wetsand and polish it up after.

Can I spray more clear on top of the dried clear coat (it will be about 12 hrs later)? Will this ruin the finish?

    Or

Do I have to take it back down to the base coat and redo the clear?

Rattle can? I think with that stuff you either need to do it within a few hours, or wait a couple weeks. Label should say though, read it.

You won't have to take it down to the basecoat.

If you're out of the recoat window (which is spec'd on the can), then you'll have to wait for the paint to outgas the solvent which can take a while, then scuff with 600 grit, until you see no more shine, then reshoot the clear.

Thanks for the info. The label only says recoat in 10 minutes.
I guess I'll wait a couple days and go at it again.

I recommend 1000 grit wet or dry till no more shine, you don't hav to go all the way to the basecoat it's just the clear, then re-shoot!!

On most of today's paints use 1000 wet or a grey scuff pad (in the hard-to-get-to corners) to re-coat clear. However, Duplicolor is lacquer (ancient technology - the re-coat will soften & melt into the first coat) so 600 is probably fine (it's what I used back in the 70's on lacquer jobs).
