how do they get that rat look?

when you see cars that "look" rusted but it just the appearance.
    is it a special paint?
do they just sand it down and let nature do work?
    any dangers to doing it?

idk if i want to do it, but just getting info for now.

Don't do it. It has never looked good under any circumstance. It's a cop out for those with cars that look shitty already.

The only car that has ever looked good without a proper paint job is that copper/patina one.

For real rust they generally grind off the paint, and use catalysts to speed up/vary the rusting process. you can also use chemicals to slow/stop the process such an motor oil, it's pretty simple really it's just based on the oxidation of metal. I wouldn't do it to a car that wasn't on it's way to the junkyard already though b/c you likely won't ever fully reverse the process, and you certainly don't want to see an estimate to go from rust to a factory fresh paint job.

As for painting to look like rust, I'd put that in the trying too hard column.

rust looks good on a few types of cars if done right, BMWs are not typically on that list but can pull it of but it's not really any cheaper than leaving them painted. Rust looks best on cars that are actually old enough that they have lost much their paint years ago and rusted naturally but that generally appears to take around 50 years from my observations.

i always like the hood with the rust look.

yeah rat rods ALWAYS look great rusted up.

if i were to do anything, i wouldnt have ass it. some nice rims and a good stance would be mandatory, as well as a prestine interior.
          thanks guys!

Your use of the phrase "nice stance" tells me all that I need to know.

^ I know where this is going when he starts speaking of a totaled vehicle in the same vein as a human being or a rock band.

Keep in mind Mike had other non totaled cars to drive most of the time when he had rusty, the e28 looked great before it was totaled, and Mike had fun with it after it was wrecked but I wouldn't ever recommend doing it to a car with a straight body and clean title. Insurance already pays out very little should we wreck our e30s rusting it should likely nearly bring the value to $0 in a hurry, but like you said you want to get enjoyment out of it. Do me a favor though, please record the phone conversation between you and the insurance company when it's wrecked and your trying to explain how hard it will be to find a fender and hood to rust and getting them to match will be nearly impossible. . . then I might get some enjoyment out of it too. :)

Perhaps you never saw how good "rusty" looked before the accident.

damn never seen that picture....it IS a completely different car. wow.

and i never said i would do an entire car in the finish. i think the hood would be good, that way if i dont like it, i can pop another hood on pretty easy.

someone said matte black, ehhh dont want a black car. flat white or grey would be legit.

That was one of the best looking E28s I'd ever laid eyes on when it was at that stage.

... and even SHE needs a paint refresh.
Euro bumps/valence, new sunroof panel, etc.. I've got all kinds of colors on the car now.
Plus the paint started giving up. She should be rolling purty by the end of summer.
