You would need more if you were shooting omni or something like that. The only PPG clear you want to use for a complete is 2021. The rest of them are for collision repair for the most part. The 2021 will flow and level nicely if you use a slow reducer. If you can get 2002 that will do it but here in CA I cant get it. Soon enough they are switching to waterborn paint... (sighs)
We already have waterborn up here in Canada; it's illegal for shops to use chem paints or to even sell over the counter...lost of people don't like them.

Are you using a primer sealer under your basecoat? if you are, I would suggest having the shop mix you a tinted(blue) primer sealer, that way when you lay down your paint it will cover with fewer passes.

Also, remember to use a slow activator for your clear coat, depending on the temperature of your booth/painting area, you will probably need slow, or maybe medium, which I doubt.

If lucky, the E36 will die peacefully, in its natural habitat, and be given the prestigious honor of donating its parts to an E30

Yeah, I'm using dupont 42440 sealer, its a medium gray. I got the slowest activator I could get, and slowest reducer for the base. It's 95 degrees with 85% humidity every day here :(

When I worked in a shop doing collision repair and basic light panel repair we used PPG DBC and switched to Envirobase paints before Envirobase was officially out on the market. We were kind of the guinea pigs since we used to paint 200+ cars a week. Both are very good.

If you are new to painting and trying to do it yourself I would recommend using the Envirobase because it is water-based and if you screw up on the base coat, you can wash it off.

If using DBC you will need to sand.

The 2021 is good stuff. We switched to something else, but I can't remember what it was offhand.

If you are doing it yourself and you are new, take your time and practice before you start spraying your car. Also remember, if you make a big mistake while you are spraying, you can always fix it and do it again, but it is best to stop immediately.
