pop out the plastic white screw in things. Mark the holes from the inside of the trunk. I only drilled two top holes for the plate. It was plenty. I used silicone to seal the bottom hole.

is this late or early model? the one i got from bavauto already had holes. just had to put it up and put the license plate on...i think i did end up putting some 3m double sided tape on the back just so it wouldn't stick up in different places but thats it.

I drilled the top 2 holes since I'm also using a 2 hole plate frame, then tried to insert the white plastic threaded plugs, but with the added thickness of the plate holder they don't clip in all the way to hold them in securely. What do you do to keep them from falling out and potentially losing everything?

Well I came up with my own solution that's fairly easy and uses the original white plastic threaded inserts. I tried to upload jpeg photos of the process, but of course the uploads failed, so I'll try to describe as accurately as I can.

First you'll need to mark and drill only the top two holes on the plate filler through the existing holes on the rear panel after removing the inner trim.

Then, using a thin saw blade or a dremel tool (I used a coping saw), cut off approximately 1/8" off the backside of two of the threaded inserts, but only down to the depth of the expanding prong that sticks into the hole. Then use a razor knife to score around the prong part and remove the ring of plastic. Basically, you want to remove enough of the round part to allow the insert to seat fully and click in place securely over the plate filler. Then seal the two lower holes with plugs and silicone sealant, mount your license plate using the top two holes and you're done. Easy peasy.

That method will allow for water leaks since the bolts aren't sealed.
