My attempt at a matte finish

Ignore the black strip up front. That's all the SEM trim paint I had left. I wanted to see how it looked because I was thinking of painting the whole hood with SEM. Just playing around with the car as it's not really worth it to me to get a whole paint job. It's an '87e with 297k miles. So, hood, roof, and trunk are badly oxidized to the point of needing a paint job. I sanded the hood with 600 grit and a palm sander (I know, I know). What do I need to achieve that matte look? Or do you think once I sand down the clear a little that maybe it could be buffed/compounded back to being shiny? BTW, it's not the original paint. It's been painted before I bought it so the paint is pretty thick.

F-it. It is very hard to make a rattle can paint job look decent, even if it is the holy sem. Do something fun with it like chalkboard paint, copper paint (see old thread about never painting car again), or make it an "art hood"

You can sand off all the clear and polish the color coat until it looks presentable.
The first car I ever rode in was an e30

See sig. I agree with the art idea. Get creative and let your artsy fartsy friends draw shit on it. Everyone can appreciate a little art on what appears to be a crappy hood.

I can't paint it chalkboard because my awesome "friends" WILL draw phalluses on it. Haha. I think I'm gonna strip it with aircraft stripper first to take care of the extreme rock chips. Then primer and paint.

That would be cool. But the car is Burgendrot and not planning on painting the whole car. Besides this gives me something to do on Sunday afternoons.
