    Rear flares for early cars?

    Title pretty much speaks for itself. I bought and ordered the DTMfiberwerks flares in hopes that I could finagle them onto my '84 coupe. Not without a good bit of work. Enough that buying another set of rear flares would be more cost effective. I'm not against doing the work but if there are any other flares out there in a similar style I wouldn't mind hearing about them. Anyone heard/seen anything?

    They don't fit early cars? What is the problem with running them?

      The rear arches are much higher. So where a late model has these mounted to flat quarter metal an early model has part of the fender lip. It doesn't sit flat. If it gets raised up, then there is a gap at the back (there is a picture of an early car with iX flares that shows this perfectly). If I just cut the quarter high enough to get to flat metal I'm not sure there is enough to actually adhere the flare with any strength.

        I had planned to cut the factory flare off completely and attach them super high up...

          Some cutting and pounding will make them fit. You really don't get any benefit with flares without it. The great thing about the flares though is it makes mounting plastic bumpers simpler.

            If you cut them off completely then you'll be left with the 2" gap at the back of the wheel opening because you'll have to mount them so high on the quarter. I guess I'm not being clear here, the fender LIP isn't what occupies the same space as these flares, it's where the curvature of the fender opening starts.

            Not my car, but I circled what I'm talking about. The factory flare "starts" higher up and prevents the DTM flares from sitting flush against the quarter. If you cut that completely off I'm not sure there will be enough material to securely attach the DTM flares? There might be but I doubt it...

            Physically bolting them to the car isn't the issue. It's getting them to mount and line up with the rear bumper. And yes, it's quite obvious that if you don't cut/pound the factory lip you won't see any benefit.

              You need to cut about an inch below where the creas for the fender starts. Cut a couple of slits too since you'll be trying to ahrink the surface area. Then hammer it flat with a body hammer and dolly. Mock up the flare and cut away any excess material. You'll then need to think about the inner fender. You can either weld it at the new seam line or pull it completely to be functional like the oem fender. Depends on how much work you want to put in to it.


              I would only recommend this with plastic bumpers. Otherwise you'll need to do a lot of glass work to the point if it being easier to mold your own using clay

                My car is going to be a track rat. Unless there's a higher quality part from a more reputable supplier, I'm just gonna cut and hack these on to run wide ass tires on my M-Systems.

                  If its a track car i'd just do it the old fashion way. Cut the fenders at the crease, pull them out till they clear your wheel and tire package, then weld in a panel from sheet metal on the exposed section. You'd be looking at less then $40 in materials assuming you have a welder. if not grab a harbor freight POS and have fun.

                    Yeah I have use of a welder, but it's still supposed to be street legal and not be pulled over for looking completely fucked...
