How hard and expensive would it be to paint my....myself

I have a 91 318I in diamondshwartz. The clear has failed on in several areas.

I'm competent I could disassemble the car, mask off the glass, etc and I have a garage to do it in.

I have a large air compressor, but no paint guns. Would need a little bit of body work but not much....

I can get store cost at Napa on all the paint, tools, and supplies I would need. Saves around 20% vs what walk in customers would pay.

I was quoted around $3500 to have a shop do it.

Would this be a bad idea for me to attempt? I have no experience with automotive painting.

I'll just be honest. You'll never know till you try. I never painted a whole car. But have painted parts (fenders and ect.) And after seeing the finished product, i was pretty pleased with it and kind of proud to say i did that! And I'd never pay someone to paint my car for $3500. If i did, it better be a show quality job with all jams painted and all trim removed. none of this quick mask and spray.

$3500 after trim removal? Sounds a bit high unless they are using pretty high end paint but even short of sanding and painting, it should not cost more than 2k since you removed what would otherwise be the shops job

My question is would it be too difficult to just handle the areas where the clear has failed. That's my sitch, or are you concerned with color match?
