I tried using Rustoleum for a motorcycle project a while back. If you try to do it right with wetsanding/layering/clearcoat... the stuff ends up wrinkling up on you once you get a nice glaze on the paint. Complete crap paint, unless you're just going to just a one-shot spray and that's it. For any sort of paint project using spray cans, I use nothing but Belton Molotow paints. The big high-pressure cans are just awesome. The bike in the avatar to the left was painted using those.
For metal trim, I'm planning on using SEM trim paint. I've done a little of this project, and it's going well.Last edited by mulletman; 12-28-2012, 11:05 PM.Comment

Did you wet-sand and layer the rustoleum? How many times?
I was shooting for an actual professional-looking glaze on my motorcycle project, and after 3-4 coats it developed some nasty wrinkling no matter what I did. I wish I had some pictures of it... After calling a local store that stocks specialty aerosol paints, the guy guessed exactly what paint I was using based on my description of symptoms.Comment

I have used rustoleum paint for seat rails and for the bottom of multiple trunks with good success. I recently used it for a hood hinge with decent (not perfect, but acceptable!) results. See my project thread on the blue car.
It would probably not be my first choice for exterior trim, I used the duplicolor bumper trim paint per Luke's suggestions with very good results (though durability is so far an unknown).Comment

Ah, that's probably why it worked. I was trying to sand out the orange-peel that spray cans inevitably provide, which meant I ended up putting on more paint than you probably did. If Rustoleum gets thick at all, you end up with issues.Comment

The SEM with the adhesion promoter shouldn't chip, since it actually melts into the plastic. On the aluminium gutter trim, anything will chip eventually - including the factory trim, as my 318 can demonstrate. The only way to get it NOT to chip for a (very) long time is to have it anodised, but I don't think that's in the cards stateside.Comment
