is there a post somewhere that covers refurbing the diving boards? just trying to go about this the cost efficient way. the worst parts are the plastics on the bumper. if you all are painting them what process are you using? would also love info on polishing the boards as well to shine then up. thanks

Polish the shit out of those bumpers! After you're done sanding sanding sanding sanding an a little more sanding and polishing, they will look so good you wont even want to swap or tuck em.

After I saw a friends bumpers on his caby, I was sold. They just look so sharp, shiny, and clean.

Why not do a plastic bumper conversion? (thats what im doing, almost done) I mean it doesn't fit perfectly, but with some work and adjustments done it will look pretty close to perfect. But then again, i guess if you are going for a rally look diving boards work better. What i would do with diving boards tho is tuck them as much as possible, and get a late model valance in the front and zender valance in the back. I think it looks real nice.

Personally, the more I look at my diving boards the more I like them... lol I'll probably paint mine though since the finish on them is getting pretty worn... And I figure the refinishing of polished aluminum bumpers isn't at all going to be cheap. Seeing as I'm gonna tuck at least the front bumper anyway, thats fine with me. The funny thing is, I really like the way the rear diving board sticks out. It adds to the flow of the car instead of just chopping it off like the plastics do. The front diving board is the biggest bother, and so I'll probably just tuck that one and leave the rear alone. of course, I also wish my window trim wasn't losing its sheen, as with the rims on my wheels being polished aluminum as well, it really sets the car off against the red. As it is though... looks like painted trim, here I come :p

So ive been doing some reading and the plastic swap doesnt look too hard, at least for the front. And I want to get some opinions on how hard it actually was. The back looks slightly painful but I think my dad and I could pull it off?? Any thoughts?

The front is all bolt on, no modifications needed. The rear requires cutting and sectioning the bumper and trim to line up with the wheel wells.. There are plenty of threads where people show their approach.

Pfft. If you want plastic bumpers, it's a decent amount of work but go for it. I thought about it for a while, but I've really fallen in love with my big flashy diving boards. It's your car, proceed as you wish.
