Cant get top to align correctly

I have an '87 vert and the top is giving me grief. I posted on bimmerforums a while back before i replaced the top, tension straps and fixed a broken slider.

Bimmerforums is the preferred online BMW Forum and community for BMW owners. At Bimmerforums, you will find technical how-to information maintenance specifics audio advice wheel and tire combinations and model specific details not found anywhere else. Since then i have finished the slider fix: https://imgur.com/YkAUXjt

Despite all this, the top contacts the cover with no shims and is nowhere near in alignment with the windshield. when shimmed correctly for the windshield the cover is all but impossible to open and close.

    My current ideas:
    • The body has crash damage that is causing the misalignment. I can see that the core support is not original so it was definitely in a fender bender at some point but the dooors open&close fine so i'm skeptical.
    • The convertible frame is somehow bent. I've looked it over though and i cant find any place where it would have been bent in such a way to cause this.
    • The top was opened at speed and the resulting force bent the attachment points on the chassis.
    • magic

Next time i'm at my garage i'm going to look at the top and try to figure out what sort of abuse could have resulted in the shearing off of those 2 sliders. This may give a clue.

*EDIT* Looked at the way the top opens. A previous owner definitely opened it at speed and damaged it.

I'm not super clear on what the misalignment is, but in addition to the shims, there are hex screw adjusters on the frame that push the front of the top towards or away from the windshield. Maybe that would help?

When it is shimmed to fit the windshield correctly, this happens so severely that the cover cannot be closed without great and destructive effort. https://imgur.com/a/TGzWd

When it is shimmed for the cover, it is unclosable. The adjustment you speak of, is it the screw that is visible in the first picture in the above album? I'l look into it but the fact remains that the linkage sticks out too far when the back is hinged up.

Yeah, the screw is under that little cap. Are you at all able to shim it so that the cover does close? Then maybe adjust the screw to reach the windshield?

My top also sometimes contacts the cover, but I think it's because one of my sliders (like the one you fixed) is broken. I find that the second folding bar from the rear needs to be pushed to the front of the car (the elastic is supposed to do this but doesn't always) and then pulling the offending hinged part of the frame towards the front allows the clearance.
