I'm in the process of doing something that's either going to look really dumb or its going to look awesome. I haven't found much on this topic, so I figured I'd start a new thread. I went to the junk yard and bought a set of plastic bumpers front and rear, Zender rear apron for diving board cars, MKIII Jetta VR6 lip, and Taurus side skirts for $50...just a heads up so people don't think I'm retarded for attempting this, I have very little money in this whole project, including the car itself...which was free (all original 1 owner mint condition).
So I bought (really got it for free after a flip) an 87 325is and I hate diving boards. I know the conversion sucks and yadda yadda but I have access to a good body shop so this shouldn't be too terrible.
So this setup:
Early Model Coupe.
Front:
Plastic bumper
Diving board IS Valence
Volvo lip
Rear:
Late model rear Plastic bumper with custom brackets and mounts.
Early model diving board Zender rear apron. (Modified to fit late plastic bumpers)
Taurus Side Skirts
I've trimmed the Zender aprons side caps to fit snug underneath the plastic bumper. It will need to be trimmed along with the plastic bumper around the wheel arch, but we all knew that.
So far, it actually lines up and looks pretty good. I've not secured the bumper at all so it's sagging a bit, but that will all be fixed no problem.
The one problem that I've run into is the plastic bumpers are much narrower then the diving boards, so I'm going to need to shorten the center apron section by a few inches, and then trim it down to where the end caps can fit over the edge and it should be done.
Has anyone else ever attempted this. Early-Late-Early. I'm also doing the same thing in the front as well. Plastic front bumper with early model IS Valence and a Volvo lip.
I'll throw up more pics as I progress
