    Sanding depth

Hey, working on sanding down my car to paint a different color. Its my first time so I started using some 80, 120, then 220 on the hood. I heard you need to get down to primer for best results. After working one section of the hood more thoroughly and the rest slightly less intensely to compare here are the results.

With the exception of the chips from the rocks, the part that is still black next to bare metal feels the same compared to the metal. What's a good standard to go by for sanding pre primer?

ok for starters, you need not take it to bare metal or primer for that matter. if the paint is not failing, than the new paint will use that as the primer. you need to sand out to 400 on a light solid color and 600 minimum on a dark metallic. things change a lot when you are doing body work etc. I suggest www.autobodyforum.com and www.autobody101.com. don't touch it with anything less than 320 or you will never get the scratches out, and they will be noticeable on anything other than white.
Looking for late model fogs, E39 Fog lights, cool cheap 17 5x120 wheels.
