Can someone lend me a hand in assessing what I should do to the rust on my tail light? I was thinking sanding, bondo, and paint. Should I just take it to a shop or will they do the same thing (although possibly better than me)?

IMO, and I am no biody pro, If it were me I would sand the rust, be sure to remove the tail light. Clean up all the rust, use a good primer and then paint it to slow/stop further damage. If you want a pro to do it, it will likley come out better. If you use bondo do some research about propper pre method, and use good products. They are more expensive, but do a better job.

I had this same issue going along the body crease on my passenger side below the tail light. With that being where the panels come together its hard to cut it out.
On mine, thankfully the rust hadn't full penetrated and was mostly surface, I used a lower grit sandpaper(nothing extreme) and got as much as I could off. Then I used petroleum jelly and a wire brush and scrubbed it as best as I could. As was said earlier, you will to remove your tail light to get it all.
Let the petroleum jelly sit on there a little while. Be careful not to get it on any paint that you wouldn't want to come off.
For the time being, I used a filler to cover the bare metal to prevent anymore rust. Plan on getting paint done in the summer of this year. Hope this helps!sigpic
