On my 97 328i sedan, wanted a bit more accessibility and my friend/tech told me to cut out the steel panel behind the arm rest. I cut the tack welds with a hammer and screwdriver, cut a door in the trunk wall liner put some door edge guards round the hole and now am able to get long objects in the car, awesome..
