I am curious about this as well. My car is in the shop getting the trim painted. It's an experiment but thought I would give it a try. I was wondering if the trim from an E36 would work. I like the "flush mount" look.

And, I believe he's talking about the chrome on the side-trim. Unfortunately, the rear section from a two door later E30 will not fit on the early e30 rear section (different rear arches) I'd just sand down the chrome and paint them.
Correct length all black rear trim for early e30s does exist, I purchased a set from Blunt and fit perfect on my 84.

      Just FWIW.

It's going back to normal. It looked great for quite a while - about 6-8 months. But, as the sun got to it, the difference in pattern of the different trim pieces began to show again. In the right light, they are still nice and black. But in direct sunlight, the difference in the "roughness" of the front and rear pieces is clearly distinct. Not to mention I accidently got wax on the middle piece, and due to the nice "roughness" of the trim piece, I couldn't fully get it out.

When money and time allow, I'm going to replace them all with new. :)

Bah, just sand and paint again, it takes all of what, 15minutes ;)

IM too lazy to remove. And I sanded forever before and it made no difference. It's forever different.

I did scotchbrite+soapy water to get any wax etc. off them, then dry, sem trim black, they all match and look good. Very easy that way.

old thread, but I just did this today with my side moldings and they look like new, brand spanking new. It only took about an hour start to finish. I used 400 grit and then just went over briefly with 1000 grit and then wiped the acetone over them. I reccomend this to make those side moldings look like new.

although old as hell. but i remembered reading this thread a while ago, and now that i've yanked my trim off, i searched acetone and found what i was looking for. will do so this weekend, and i'll post some pics of the result.

i wonder how this holds up in the long run

Dupli-Color "Bumper Coating". Has a very mild "gloss"-ness to it that I really appreciate. Ended up hitting everything black on my DD after the PO had nearly everything painted monochromatic.

If you have "texture" on your side rub strips, definately sand them down to smooth. But I highly suggest hitting it with some sort of paint.

I need a little advice guys. I took all my side trim off sanded it down and painted it. It's been about 15 hours and I picked up a piece but it was still a little tacky feeling. Did I do something wrong? I thought for sure it would be dry by now

Was the trim dripping with acetone when you painted it?

Nope I lightly wiped it down with denatured alcohol. It finally ended up hardening up after close to 24 hours. Its now back on the car and looking great :) Thanks!
