I sprayed the clear today
To update, I sprayed the Griot's clear today.
It went on very nicely and lay as flat as anything I've ever sprayed (from a piss can). To Trent's credit, the clear did reveal the metal flake effect that I hadn't seen before. The silver basecoat looked more homogenous before I cleared it and now I can see the metal flakes.
It's not disco-gaudy sparkly, only slightly sparkly, but certainly more-so than the original BBS silver.
Having tried the Duplicolor I would still highly recommend the Griot's products. The color is extremely close, the slight sparkling is fine and the paint is very good quality. As in anything that involves painting 95% of good results stem from prep work.

Oh yeah, for people that refer to this thread in the future: Duplicolor clear is incompatible with Griot's paint. I found out when the clear started looking all hazy and yellow when I laid down some Duplicolor clear over Wurth. I ran out of clear and I didn't want to wait another few days for a can of paint to get to my house, so I tried Duplicolor.
Fortunately, I now have an air compressor, so once I get a detail gun I should be ready to paint wheels with "real" paint.Leave a comment:

Guest repliedThe duplicolor is an odd silver...its too dark, so it looks really dark in shadows. The Duplicolor has a bigger flake in it, but it seems (to me) to have that shadowing effect Trent talked about in the linked thread.
If I were worried about it, I'd repaint the other three wheels in my set with it as well, but they are just for the track. So I just painted the one where I fixed the gashes in it.Leave a comment:

That's a good read. I think I read the info on Acura silver somewhere else and it was my first choice, but the only shop I found in the DC area that mixes into spray cans wanted a 12 can minimum.
One day I will invest in an HVLP sprayer!

The metallic flakes are bigger in the Griot's paint than the stock metal flake, as Trent said. It's fine if you painted all four wheels, but it might look weird if you painted anything less than the full set of wheels.
I am in that boat, because I painted 2 out of 4 Double Spoke II wheels. I'll just buy two more DSIIs in good cosmetic condition, because the stock paint will be more durable than stuff that comes out of a spray can.Leave a comment:

Guest repliedI don't like the big silver metallic chips!!!!!!!Wurth silver paint USED to be excellent- not sure but I heard that they changed the formula to make it more environmentally friendly.
But, if it's the same stuff they sold 3-4 years ago, then I have to disagree with Trent. I used it on several sets of BMW alloys and they all turned out great- and those I still have in my posession still look great today.
Trent, what don't you like about Wurth silver paint????????

Griots!
I got my Griot's silver wheel paint a few days ago and I will attest that (so far) it is a good product. It has the Gucci spray nozzle, applies very nicely, and the color is *very* close to original BBS silver.
I'll let the first coat cure for a few more days, apply a second coat and then clear after that cures.
I'll update this after I've applied some clear.

Thanks for the input. I primered with an acid etching primer made by U-POL. It's fantastic stuff that has a really nice nozzle. I've been using that nozzle on other cans with great results and will use on the clear, as well, if the original nozzle sucks.
I've been heating my rims and paint to about 85F and painting horizontally.

I forgot to add, Griot's clear coat is pretty hard to get to lay down flat. Yes, the nozzle sucks. You should definitely get one of those can triggers to snap on the top of the cans. It really helps reduce fatigue. You can pick one up at Home Depot for around $2.
If I were you I'd add at least one extra can of silver paint to your supply. The cans get "spitty" probably when there's 15-20% or so paint left in the can, especially if you're spraying the wheels horizontally. If you sprayed the wheels while they are vertical, you could probably use more paint out of each can. I was just a little paranoid with the metal flake looking weird if I painted the wheels while they were vertical.Leave a comment:

Griot's paint is made in Germany, so there is definitely a chance that it's Wurth.
I've found the shade is an exact match to the OE wheel color, but the metal flake size is slightly larger.
I repainted 2 out of 4 M Double Spoke IIs and the shade is definitely correct, but you can tell the repainted wheels are more "sparkly."Leave a comment:

I ordered Griot's paint. It's reasonable at $9/can and is "very close" to the original silver.
I spent way too much time stripping my wheels down to settle for a color that is not close to original. I agree that the Duplicolor is good paint... just the wrong color.
I'll let you know how well Griot's works.
