However, the ducts do NOT mount directly to that panel, but there is a section of fender liner that mounts to that big piece, then mounts to the fender.

    The ducts slip into those.

You may be right, I have an 89 cabrio and I assembled those panels for the photo to what appeared correct since I didn't have a late-model car in front of me to guide me. So like Luke said, the pics might not be a totally accurate way of how the panels mount together.

I checked the Part number and it was 51-71-1-961-999 but has then been superseded to part number 51-71-1-965-899, from what Pelican Parts shows:

        Luke,

The inner sides of the ducts do mount to the plastic tray and the outside mounts to the fender liner, atleast that's the impression I get from the posted pictures ?

I wonder if this tray is universtal for all E30s ?

I will be installing my GF's tomorrow. I will do what I can. Her left duct mount is broken all to hell, but the right is perfect. I will try and remember to take some photos.

Not quite. The duct mounts entirely to the valence in the front and passes through the 2 vertical outer panels, which mount to the under tray ( Heat Shield?) and the fenders.

I dont see how it would fit an early without mods. If it were a late valence I bet it would drop right in.

I am gonna find one of the metal braces that cover the bottom of the tranny for my early "is".

I have a late valance and all on mine, I was wondering if there were any other differences that would prevent it from lining up correctly .. I hate discovering that I need more and more parts :(

                  brake air duct tube

I'm resurrecting this very helpful thread to ask a related question.Turns out I'm missing the driver's side brake air duct. I'm trying to figure out the part # on RealOEM: do I need #2 (51712238867) or #5 (51711979139)? Either one?

                  http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...65&hg=51&fg=75

And, does anyone have a spare one lying around?

                  Thanks!
