How Important Is the trim around the front and rear windows?

I am asking about the plastic piece that goes inside the rubber gaskets on the windshield and rear window. I took them ot while painting the car, and cant get them in. How do i get them in?

I used the screw driver/ bottle opener on my swiss army knife to put mine back in. I also used dish soap to help slide the rubber over the trim.

Tools specifically for this are available, but you can make something similar from heavy gauge wire. Soap definately helps in the installation.

Also, I would bet driving without these lock strips is a safety issue.

It helps to do it on a hot day and leave it out in the sun before installing it.

I bought the windshield lockstrip tool from bavauto to do my last windshield. If anyone wants it, let me know. I'll sell it for less than Bavauto does.

Somebody already PM'd me saying that he wants it, but if that falls through, I'll let you know.
Mine is better than the one linked to above. Go to bavauto and look through the tools. I believe the part number is 47000.

harbor freight sells a tool like that for cheap. No experience with it, but it looks similar.

You don't need the tool. It's actually quite easy to do with out it, just time consiming. I didn't use soap or leave it in the sun or anything. Just put it in so that one side of it is under the gasket, and then use a flat blade (i used a flexible putty knife) to push the other side in.

It's worked flawlessly and doesn't leak or make noise.

i wrecked both my thumbs trying to put the rear, bottom strip back in. 3 days after i did this, both my thumbs decided to blister.

i somehow managed to get mine in without any dishsoap.

i wasnt able to get the 'L' bottom corner metal pieces back in though, i just went to my bodyshop guy and asked for him to do it.

moral of the story, if ur fucking around with your windshield and dont have a next move, consult a bodyshop.
