Anyone know the rough price of a new paintjob from BMW? or know of a place that can hook up a cheap original repaint?

Umm, well very few... if any, BMW dealerships at least in the states will be able to paint your car. They will gladly recommend you to a body shop though.
When it comes to painting the car, how cheap are you looking for? Your gonna get what you pay for, so if your hopes are for under a grand? Then you might as well forget it for now because the job wouldn't be worth it.
My 2 cents - save up at about 3k then take the car into a nice body shop (no macco). Talk to the manager and work out the deal of how much can they can hook you up with for your cash. You'll be Very happy -
some dealers that have collision repair will paint it. Last time I talked to the dealer in Illinois they wanted $5-6kComment

$5000 paint job on a $2500 car? Not a good move.
Guaranteed some uninsured moron will hit your no-collision-coverage E30 a week later. And no, the insurance won't cover that new paint job.
Maaco will paint base/clear for around $1000. Probably not going to get anything decent for less than $1500.sigpicComment

no! it is all in the quality of the prep work (which is usually crappy at macco) and the paint they use. their std paint is usually Western which sucks!!
the upgrade is Sherman Willams which is actually pretty good.
their painters are actually really good since they paint 4-5 cars + a day

In the painting world, sealer is what you spray on before you paint (helps with adhesion)
Externally, no. Most bad (cheap) paint jobs fail from bad prep. Mine is a prime example. Nice shiny paint flaking up everywhere. PO had them do a scuff and shoot. On the hood you can see that they didn't even DA it.

PO already took a brillo pad to the back half of my car, would my best bet be to finish the job and take it in with the whole thing already scuffed up with the pad?Advanded Delphin Division

Just scuffing it isn't your best bet. Sand it with 600 wet or dry. I like wet sanding because it helps clean as well. Remove as much trim (door handles, bumpers, moldings, etc.) as you can, this will save you paying the body shop labor time which is really what you pay for. When you get a full repaint the paint material cost you are charged is usually about $1000-$1700, that includes primers, searlers, paint, clear, tape, sand paper, masking paper, etc. Paint material cost is factored at an hourly rate also. Usually $23-$27 an hour, and a complete correctly done paint job is quoted about 60 hours. The other $3000-$15000 you pay for is labor. So the more work that a body shop has to do(fixing dents, removing trim) other than the 4-6 hours it take to prep and paint the car, the more you are gonna pay. Most body shops are collision shops which deal with insurance companies and the material cost at real shops, not maaco, is a national average no matter if they use Dupont, PPG or Sherwin Williams. A lot of times a shop will drop that cost if it is an "owner pay" not insurance.sigpicComment

Sign up at a community college auto paint class. That way you can learn how to do it and possibly have some guy whose been doing it for years help you out with it. Thats the route im taking. The only downside is just waiting a couple of months to actually begin the painting process.

i got mine done for about $600 and got a 2 year warranty(great choice) with it from Earl Schieb. i got it painted about 1 1/2 years ago and it looked great but its already needs new paint again the edges of the fender flares and the rear bumper and side skirts have encountered some peeling. If you want paint that will last so you dont have to be afraid to touch your car then pay at least $1000 or make sure you get a warranty so you can go get the damage repainted for free.
