I went to do my plastic bumper swap today and ran into a strange snag. My car is an 88 so I purchased a set of the proper shocks and sliders from a member on here as well as a plastic bumper cover and re bar from a different member. After getting the new shocks and sliders onto my car I went to slide the plastic re bar with the 2 metal brackets onto the mounting shanks of the new shocks and there is like almost a 1/2 inch difference? It looks like either the metal brackets are too short or the shanks on the shocks are too long? Has anyone ever run into this situation before and can give me some advice? I really don't want to but the old shocks and diving board in again!!

Ok here is a diagram from realoem. Part number 9 (rear bracket) is either too short or the shank on number 13 is too long? The bracket is supposed to slide onto the shank then a hex key bolt holds it all in place. I will try to get pics tomorrow but my digi is in the shop.

Well I didn't want to do it but I ended up cutting and grinding the shanks to make the brackets fit. They do fit but not the way they are supposed to. If anyone has a set of rear bumper shocks for plastic bumper cars please let me know as I can't live with the fit I now have.Last edited by direction88; 10-10-2008, 03:10 PM."Drifting an E30 is like pouring out a beer just to get a nickel for the can"Comment

I recently swapped out my plastic bumper as well. My car is a '90 and the bumper had damage from the previous owner. I have a pair of brackets and shocks. When you get a chance, measure the height of post on the shock as well as the bracket. Post those measurements and I'll see how they compare to mine.Comment

You must use plastic bumper specific rear shocks. I have a spare set I can ship you for $40.
