Rubber shadowline paint

Is the factory shadowline trim thicker around the back pop-out window? Now that mine is black, I've noticed there's a huge gap between the trim pieces around the top and back of the window!

I plasti dipped my bumpers on my e28 the same day my buddy did his e30 vert. That was about 4 months ago or so. So far it is holding up great. I have a couple small spots that are peeling from my quick and crappy prep job but no chips yet.
My only complaint is water spots. It seems to kinda "hold on" to them. Anyone else have this issue?

How's this holding up for you guys? From the looks of it, half of your signatures in this thread have aluminum trim.
I'm halfway done with mine now, but I've got a few little areas I've got to touch up somehow. But I like how easy it is to do for someone like me who should not be allowed to perform autobody work of any kind.

Edit: As far as a process for using plastidip for shadowlining, it's pretty simple:
1. Clean the trim thoroughly. Can this include sanding? Sure. Will it adhere without sanding? Yes. Will the plastidip self-level and hide small imperfections? NO.
2. Either remove the trim, or mask it off on the car (this part is pretty self explanatory).
3. Spray the stuff in light coats. Be patient. Spraying too much at once makes it drip, which ruins the whole job. Wait until it no longer looks wet, but looks flat instead, and then spray another coat. This is only about 30 minutes. I did 4 or 5 coats on my trim, taking basketball/Xbox/food breaks.
4. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP! If you have done the trim on the car, before you peel off the masking, take an xacto-knife and cut through the plastidip between the trim and the tape. Otherwise, when you pull up the tape, it WILL peel jagged runs into your trim and it'll look like complete ass and you'll have to take it all off and start over. Ask me how I know.
5. You're done. You can clean the stuff with the same implements/solvents that you use to clean the rest of the car. It holds on like paint.
Tip: If you get any overspray on the body of the car, as I did, take two fingers and rub really hard on the spot and after 30 seconds to a minute, it will rub off without damaging your paint.Last edited by Slangbox; 10-25-2009, 01:36 PM.

Mine also comes off at the rear door where the rubber seal rubs the corner of the trim when opening the door. Just to share. I'm gonna do powdercoating.

any one tried using spaycanned Rubber Under Coating for this purpose? Seems like a very similar product.

quick question... for you guys who did the kidneys -- did you tape off the slatted portion, or did you just spray the whole thing?

Ok, my shadowline is coming off where the door's rubber seal touches the chrome of the trim because of the opening and closing of the door. I don't have passengers often, so the passenger side is still holding on.
I also tested it out in an automatic car was, and the plastidip stayed on, but I found out my moonroof leaks real bad.
So well, that's my story.

Aw man that sucks. I did mine well over 5k ago and they still look great. I scrub them pretty good when I detail the car too.
Although, I was wondering If anyone else had this problem:
I did my side molding (early style) with Plasti-dip and it never fully cured. On the metal its nice and solid like it should be, but on the rubber/plastic part of the trim its sticky like its still wet. I basically did the exact same thing with my mirrors and they came out perfect. Im thinking its because the moldings are rubber though.
