    Clear Coat Fix?

Hey guys, the clear coat on my project E30 is completely gone on the trunk and the roof. As i'm scouring the internet looking for solutions to this, I keep running across two conflicting statements. Some say that you can prep the surfaces and spray on new clear coat while others say that the base coat will have too much damage from the sun and you have to do a complete respray of the damaged area. I'm a fairly solid DIY guy and I did paint correction for small spot on the front bumper of my old E60 but this would be a much bigger task. Is there anyone who has been in this similar situation that would like to weigh in? The car is schwarz and I intend to keep it the same color (adding this because I have heard black is one of the hardest colors to paint on a car).

The internet is probably correct on this one, in mild cases you can recover from clear failure, although you do risk near future failure around the perimeter of the missing clear. Best bet for a long term fix is to just do the entire area.

Bummer, was hoping I could take the low cost route but, seeing as I plan to make this my forever car, I would rather do it right the first time. Thank you for the input.
