    Thinking about rusting my trunk

First off... if you are going to be negative please don't post. I know people hate it and think it looks dumb... still don't care.

Anyways, I'm want to go to the yard and find me a wingless trunk to rust and I'm gonig to save my nice red trunk for if I hate the rusted look... I'm need a little guidance on how its done.

I know I take it down to metal and get it good and cleaned off.

But after that should I let it do it naturally or use chemicals?

    If chemicals which ones work?

    road salt + water solution

wipe it on, let it set for an hour, hose it off

it'll take a few weeks after that to really "rust over"

might be a good idea to clear-coat over the rust, once the desired effect is reached, to prevent any further rust

A lot of people use vinegar and a warm salt water solution. For smaller objects you would soak in vinegar overnight, spray a hot salt water solution over the piece, and then allow it to dry naturally. Spray with water occasionally during the drying process as this speeds up the rusting a bit. After awhile of drying/wetting, wash off the piece with just water and blow it dry with an air nozzle or something similar. After that you can let it rust naturally or clear it to slow the process down.

Hope this helps, post pics when your done and how you did it.

      EDIT

Here is an interesting method if your resourceful and have the balls to try it:

You'll need a source of DC electricity, a tub of water and some salt (maybe a tablespoon). Connect a piece of steel to the positive output from your DC source, stick that in the water, and then stick the negative output into the water (but don't let the two touch). Switch on your power supply and let it sit, I usually do this overnight. Make sure you unplug your power supply before attempting to get at the sweet rust meats inside (I think this goes without saying). BE CAREFUL NOT TO ZAP YOURSELF!
      EDIT

Or if you REALLY want to go all out:

I finally found the right combinations to create 100 years of rust in two day process. I'll start with the chemicals, the amounts will very depending on your surface area. I'm basing on 4' x 4' x 1/4" steel both sides.

      Chemicals:
      1 gallon Distilled Water
1 pint MEK / methyl ethyl ketone [link is to product info at Amazon]
2 pints Muriatic Acid [link is to product info at Amazon]
1 half gallon Hydrogen Peroxide [link is to product info at Amazon] (Semiconductor Grade)
1 Cup Sea Salt, Course [link is to product info at Amazon] (Table salt has Talc and will affect the final look)
1 Cup Iron Filings [link is to product info at Amazon] or Ferric Oxide

      Tools:
1 Pair PVC Gloves “Acid resistant”
      1 Box Latex Gloves
      2@ 2" to 4" PVC paint brush
      1@ 2 gallon plastic bucket
      1@ Plastic Spray Bottle
      1@ Pizza Cheese Shaker
      1@ Water Hose

      Preparation:
      1. Have your target steel sandblasted to raw metal with an even texture.
      2. Find a well ventilated area with access to a water source and drain attach the hose to the water source.
      3. Mix equal parts Sea Salt and Iron Filings into the Pizza Cheese Shaker.
      4. Fill the plastic spray bottle with Hydrogen Peroxide set the spray pattern to mist and store in a cool dark place until needed. Use Latex gloves; this will burn your skin fast.
      5. Lay the intended rusting surface face up and flat. Using rags use the MEK / methyl ethyl ketone [link is to product info at Amazon] and clean any oil, dirt off the surface of the bare metal.
      6. Mix the Muriatic Acid and Distilled Water in the plastic bucket and let rest “Cool” be sure to use the PVC Gloves.

      Process:
      1. Using the mixed Acid and paint brushes heavily coat the surface of the steel and let stand for 15 minutes.
      2. Using the water hose rinse the Acid mixture off the surface of the steel.
      3. While the surface is still damp sprinkle the Sea Salt & Iron evenly over the surface of the steel.
      4. Spray the salted surface with the Hydrogen Peroxide and watch the rust form allow it dry and repeat steps 3 & 4 until you achieve the desired finish.
      5. Allow surface to dry thoroughly and continue to the next desired surface.

just pull the paint off using paint stripper, then with bare metal put some vinegar over it

you can also heat it up with bare metal with say torch or heat gun, then shoot water on it while its hot. Flash rust extreme!

I'm with Luke on this. But if someone wants their car to look like SHIT, go right ahead and make it. But when you post up on a forum with guys that make their cars look shiny and presentable, expect to be flamed.

I know its pretty hated, I come from Integra where I personally have hated on rusted hoods. I think that rusted stuff looks good on older style cars, e30's being one of them. Also I'm not sure that I'll like it, I'm going to try it on a junkyard trunk and if I hate it I'll still have my shiney red trunk w/ my iS spoiler to put back on.

I just want to try something new... for me.... I know other have done it but on my last two builds I did on Integras I did the paint only option, its very clean I agree but I just want to try it. I know everyone has an opinion but I didn't ask what do you guys think or how do you think it will look. Thats the only reason that I put that, because I've made up my mind that I'm going to try it... but it doesn't mean that it will stay on there.

Plus I hang out with another red e30 and our cars look very similar... and I have an issue with looking like everyone else, and no one else does rusted stuff in the midwest so I'm gunna try it. Just to make you feel better I hang out with a very clean plastic bumpered alpine white e30 w/ bbs rs's. I absolutely love the car. I'm not against cleanly painted cars... just want to try something new.

Maybe its a lemons car, and he feels the car looks too nice. I have something up my sleeve for our Lemons car noone's done yet, it should be fun. Knowing how sensitive these guys are it should be a shit flingin contest.

BTW these guys are making it sound like a science when all you need to do is strip it down and rub it down with bleach. Although i think the only way to really pull of the rusted look is do the whole entire car.
