5 hours of wetsanding later... Wheel work

So Today I started to refurbish my wheels. Ive never really done any thing liek this before, only a little paint wet sanding, so i really had no idea what to expect.

    Heres what I started with:

And so on I went, starting with 220, then 400, then 800 then 1000.

A solid 5 hours later my result turned out pretty good- polished the lip afterward as well, and I have not done the 1000 on the spokes yet. Nor washed the wheel, so it all looks a bit gray.

Now, each step of the wetsand took at least 30 minutes, an hour would be more likely; the first 220 stage easily took longer because i had the most work to do with all the pitting and corrosion.

Put the wheel back on the car so i can drive to work tomorrow, didnt have time to wash it etc... My question is, for the corrosion im seeing on these wheels, is there a faster or more efficient way of polishing these up? Im fully prepared to do a wheel a day, just curious to see if anyone encountered, and conquered the same situation in less time with less effort.

...Anyone? Will a good polish and corded drill take some labor out of the process?

yes, but it has to be smooth first. So it really is only a replacement for the higher grits

That's what I thought, no shortcuts to do it right I suppose, I'll just polish after the 1000 grit, see what that gets me.

you could probably start with the compounds more in the 600-800 range, unless youre set on mirror polish

Yeah, I was thinking about that, but I decided i may as well just go all the way with it and polish them up nicely. The only really big pain in the ass are those damn spokes.

                I'd also go 1500 then 2000 after 1000 grit.

                It looks good otherwise.

But I'm super picky on a polished surface.

Polishing is a lot of work. Im slowly doing my wheels.

I think the most time consuming thing I've polished was a 03 gsxr. Took me damn near a month working on 4-6 hours a day.

yeeaah, Its pretty much a wheel a weekend, especially if I get the spokes looking proper... but im starting to think a dremel with gritty polish may be the best way to deal with the spokes...

I'm also an Idiot and should have posted this in the wheels catagory.... maybe someone can help me with centercaps for these.

Which is what I'll do right now.

REPOSTING IN THE WHEELS AND TIRES SECTION, to try and get some centercap fab ideas.

                  forgive me mods.
