All black early diving board bumpers w/ color matched valances?

Hey guys, I have an 88' is. I do not have the money for a plastic bumper conversion/new paint since I am currently saving for a stroker build.

I was wondering if anyone had pics of early bumpers painted completely black (bumper shrouds, acutal bumper, etc) while the bottom valence is still the car color.

Looking for a zinno car with this, but any car will do.

Lastly, is there a color close to zinno that comes in a spray can, that i could get from a local auto parts store?

Thank you, just trying to touch some looks up until i can afford to do it the right way.

Rustoleum Regal Red is supposedly a near perfect match for zinno. There was either a thread on here or bf.c about it...pretty cool actually.

Also, there are definitely some folks on here that have done exactly what you're talking about. IMO black big bumpers look pretty damn good on red cars.

So if you run by Autozone or whatever, you could easily pick up Duplicolor trim paint (it's in a green can) for the bumpers/shroud/trim and Rustoleum Regal Red and totally be dialed. If you haven't already, do your headlight and kidney grills too.

Lastly, you don't have to be just "touching it up" or hacking it. Yes, the paint comes out of a rattle can, but if you take your time and put a little work into it your car will come out looking great.

Yea, I understand its all in the prep. Ive painted a ton of things on my previous vws solely from rattlecans and some turned out pretty decent. Just a quick question what do you mean headlight and kidney grills? Just respray them with the trim black so they do not look like the faded black?

Eurotrash, that was my original plan but I wanted to see how an all black including bumper shroud looked like. I saw a guy somewhere a while back in his sig, white car with alll black bumpers (they looked like early style from the best i could see) and it looked awesome. Reminded me of the early big bumper vw mk2 retro feel.

What is the name for that valance?

I want to put one on my 88, I love how flush it sits with the tucked bumper.

Yep, exactly. Then the front end will not only match, but look pretty new. It's amazing what trim paint will do, but seeing as how you come from the VW world you probably already know that.

A note on the kidneys: it seems like blacking out the chrome on the kidneys thing isn't as big anymore (personally, I'm happy to see that), but you could certainly do it. If you're just going to paint the grills inside the kidneys keep in mind that you CAN remove the "chrome" surround piece during painting. It's a little tricky but can be done and obviously saves on masking work.

I agree, I painted mine, regretted it and stripped them back down to chrome.

btw euro trash, is that the rustoleum regal red on the bumper shrouds and valence? looks pretty decent.

As of now, one of my bumper bolts is stripped. I will hopefully be drilling it out tomorrow, and removing it if all is well.

When I have the time off (not sure if I really wanna daily this thing with no bumper/valence as a wait for my parts to dry), I will paint these with the shrouds color matched. Im gonna take pictures before and after to show you guys, just as an informative thread I guess.
