    Painting car options...

I really need to get my car in one color. No more two color for me. The car seems to have been painted not to long ago, maybe 4-5 years. it was in a minor accident and got a black hood and driver fender.

these are the options at this point.

    1. paint hood and driver fender to match rest of car.
    2. go to maaco and have them paint it all
    3. check out local vocational tech school to see if they will do it for me

    4. spend big money :(

I dont have money to do a real paint job, and have failed to find any matching body panels from a donor car. If option 3 works out I am sure it would probably be the best, because they can do remove some dents as well.

I'd say, prep the car yourself (mask everything off and remove all the trim you can) and have Maaco do it. I don't know if they have quality paint options, but if they do, pay the extra and have it done or see if they'll use paint that you provide them.

This is just my opinion, and I will get flamed for it, but what the hell...
I am in the same boat as you, well sorta. My car is cirrus blau metallic, but some is fadded, and some isn't. This spring I will be replacing a rusted fender with a new non painted one, so what better time to get a respray. I know everyone says don't go to maaco (or earl scheib) but I, and I know most of you don't have the money for a "professional" paintjob. I am considering Earl Scheib because of their low price ($600-$700 for their "top" paintjob plus warrenty). I'm planning on going to all Earl Scheibs and Maacos in my area and scoping the place out (ie. checking out the paint facilities, make sure there are plenty of fans, make sure cars aren't dryed outside, check out some of their recently painted cars, etc...) Also, I would make damn sure that they know I will be returning if I see any fuck ups. As I said I don't have the money to piss away on an incredable excellent paintjob, so I may go this route. There, I've said it. I'm being cheap with my BMW.

You aren't seriously considering taking your car to those morons. Tell me you aren't.

If you can't afford a decent paint job, save your money. Your car will live in the meantime. Skimp on money for a paint job, and you WILL regret it.

my friend once brought his car to maaco and they painted his car the wrong color. it was suposed to be a dark blue and they made it this bright blue(kinda like smurf color) when he went to pick it up and saw it he fliped out on him. He got no money back but got to get another paint job from them for the same value for free.

            goodluck with them

ya a decent paint job costs ALOT. I say either do all the prep work yourself (trim removal, masking tape, strip old paint and maybe even primer the car yourself ect...) then get a decent paint job at macco or whatever...or save your money for a real paint job. I'm not looking forward to the day my car needs to be resprayed

Ok, maybe not quite $10k, but closer to around 6-7. Ask Jordan about that one. Any paint/body shop that KNOWS what they are doing isn't going to charge only $3000.

I would want my paint to look concours quality.

                        Do it yourself.

If you're a cheapass that has way too much time, it won't look as bad as you think. I'd rather screw up my own paintjob than have some idiot at Maaco screw it up.

Spray Cans are the way to go. Figure the whole car will take about 30 of them at 5 bucks a pop and you have a great paint job for $150.00!!!!!!!!
                          :P :P :P :P :P :P :P

Seriously, though, I don't know about Maaco, but stay away from Scheib. Back in the day when I was 16 (1986) I took my first car, a hand me down Toyota Corolla to Scheib because a) it needed to be painted, and b) I had very limited funds. Their prep and masking work was awful, and there were two (very small) runs in the paint. For the 100.00 or so bucks I paid I could have lived with that if the color would have been close to what I had wanted. But it turned out darker and flatter than the color chips appeared. While it was better than the hodge podge primer job I had had, it still sucked.

I would never pour 6k plus into my e30 for paint, but I wouldn't go to one of these spray and pray places either.

i dont even feel like arguing, but if you think you have to spend 6k to get a great paintjob, more power to you.

My question is this: who the fuck cares to put that much money into a car that is worth the same or less?

When you don't plan on selling it for a long time, and it's worth more to you than bluebook. :-/.

My supereta would sell for like $1500. I'm going to drop a little over that replacing the clutch, tranny seals, shift linkage, muffler, pass window motor, reupholstering, and fixing that god damn misfire.

And I won't think twice. I love my car :)
