    used vert top help?

The top currently on my car leaks like crazy due to the weatherproofing having come off. I've tried two different kinds of spray on weatherproofing, neither of which did any good. I can't afford to buy a new top right now. Found a black one locally that the guy said he'd sell me for $150. I've checked the inside of the car on a rainy day and there is only slight leaking on the passenger side over the back seat. All the seals seem to be fine, and the rear window isn't cracked, just a little hazy. HOWEVER. The material on the inside of the top seems to be flaking off. nothing major, just looks crappy and will probably be worse once it's top down weather and i'm folding down the top a lot. Have any of you ever experienced this? Ideas on what to do to it to make it stop flaking? I've considered heavy spray adhesive and fabric to kind of make a headliner for a soft top but I doubt that would hold up well. I just don't want to spend the $150 if the flakiness isnt repairable or at least stoppable.

    Thanks guys

Yeah, mine did this. Real pain, it leaves your fingers dirty if you touch it and sheds all over the car. I never figured out how to stop it, eventually it developed some small holes and the rear plastic window went and I just replaced the whole thing. One clue though, I also bought a used top to replace it, and the newer one has a separate herringbone-fabric headliner, which my previous top didn't have. Not sure if it's just a different kind of top or if the PO removed the old headliner for some reason. If so, you might be able to swap with yours.

But what do you mean your "weatherproofing" came off? You mean seals? 150 is a good deal, especially if it has all the seals and the frame operates well. Could you put together one good top from the good parts of both?

Nah the seals are okay. Weatherproofing on the canvas is gone in that when it rains the entire top lets water drip in. Not on the edges where the seals are, but like on top if my head as im driving. Reeeeal pain in the ass..
I havent heard of a headliner type material on soft tops like youre talking about, interested in the materials used for it though. Maybe i can make one for this top.

Maybe headliner is the wrong term, it's definitely a second layer of canvas, separate from the one exposed to the weather, with a herringbone-like pattern. And my old top didn't have it, and had the same flaking problem. I assume my new one will also have the flaking problem but it's hidden behind the other fabric.

Here's a link to a pic from badcab's excellent write up (http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=240865 ), you can see the herringbone material on the inside:

            ahh ok gotcha.

That thread is really helpful, read through it the other day. Will definitely be using it as a reference if I'm ever able to buy a new top.
