My friends just got his car painted...some orange peel

My friend's 1990 325i just got a white paint job two weeks ago and some areas have some slight orange peel finish. Can this be sanded to remove, if so what to use?

What sandpaper number, what steps to take?

    Thanks.

go to the discussion board at www.autobodystore.com They can tell you everything. I believe they also have a how to article on removing orange peel.

If your friend had it painted at a bodyshop, tell him to bring it back so that they can finish their job properly....especially if he paid alot.

For relatively bad orange peel, wet sand #600, then #800, then #1000 (or thereabouts). The use "intensive polish" which is usually about #1500, then polish. Don't wax the car (paint needs a few months to fully cure).

Sounds like a reasonable course of action to me. When I had my driver side door repainted (old man backed into it) and the paint was blended with the rest of that side, the clearcoat started to come off a few months later. Something just didn't take correctly in applying it, no big deal. I took it back to them and they fixed it up no problem.

The orange peel is slight, just how the paint finish was on some areas.

Bing - disregard my #600. I know I used increasing grades, but can't remember where I started (and now that I think about it, Tuff240 is right, it couldn't have been #600). Anyway, if its just slight, he should wet sand with the finest that he can, and grade up from there. Finish will be dull until he gets to the fine polish stage.

600 would take your paint off in a second. All you need is some 2000 or 2500 grit and wet sand the panel thoroughly. You can use increasing grades if you want but it doesnt really make much of a difference. If you dont know how to wet sand, dont try.
