I've started to remove my pinstripe - but I've got a problem

Let me start by saying that yes, I know a thread was made about a week ago on the same thing - and I looked at it. However, it was also asking if he should take the stripe off or not - so I felt a new thread was a better idea in this case.

So, anyway, I started working at removing my pinstripe today. There are two vinyl stripes on my car - ones a darker blue while the other is a lighter blue - very close to the color of the car.

The dark blue stripe is coming off fine. However, the lighter blue stripe is being a lot less cooperative when it comes to coming off - I can barely get it off at all. And, when I do, it leaves a pretty noticeable residue behind.

I've been using Mcguier's cleaning stuff (whatever its called), Goof-Off 2 (should I use 1??), and my fingernail.

So, yeah - this residue is refusing to come off. I've been using the Goof-Off 2, as I said above. Should I be using the original Goof-Off?

Let me also mention that I tried using a hairdrier too.

Also - when I got the top pinstripe off, I'm guessing the VERY feint line you see, where the edges of the stripe used to be, are permanent. I'm just wondering.

Basically, I'm trying to figure out how to get this residue off.

    Thanks.

      What's the difference between Goof-Off 1 and 2?

i've debadged a few of my friends cars and the hairdryer and goo gone combo seems to work very well. After we did that we waxed that area very well and it seemed to turn out fine. Oh ya the fingernail scratching works wonders. Good luck

After the pinstripe is removed there will be a faint line as the pinstripe has protected the paint against the sun and elements.

one's more caustic than the other.

What you need is a rubber "sanding" disc --- they have 'em at bodyshops. Standard 3M kinda thing.

Strip the badge off with dental floss/wire of some kind. Then rub the sticky stuff away with the disc, give it a tiny li'l squirt 'n' wipe with the Goo Gone or whatever, and you're money 8)

That's what my favourite bodyshop used, when they debadged my E36 for me in a matter of seconds, for free, before my very eyes.

I used a hairdryer to get my pinstriping off, worked very well. Probably a hell of a lot less tedious than using your fingernails. Then I just waxed really well with a cleaner wax where the stripes were to get any remaining residue or dirt off of the area.

Do you know where I can get some rubber sanding discs? ;)

That's something else I was thinking of doing, removing the badge - what's the best way to do this?

I'm gonna try out some goo-gone right now, probably. I'll let you all know how it goes.

dental floss under the badge on a hot day, then the same process you're doing.

I got lucky. I looked up an auto body place here in town, thought they sold actual auto body DIY parts - WRONG. They directed me to Paint and Spray Supply Inc. about a block away.

I tell him I want to remove a pinstripe, and he hands me a "Smart Eraser Pad". On the package it says, "Developed to dramatically reduce time spent on removal of Pinstripes, Adhesive, and Double Faced Tape" Sweeeet 8) Hooks right into a drill.

I'll be getting some pictures of this, he explained to me how to use it, and it seems pretty dang simple. I hope to give it a try tomorrow. :D

OK, just an update for those that care.

It's coming along REALLY well. Of course, since the paint IS over 17 years old, its not perfect, but you can only tell if you get close and in the right lighting. Most pictures it looks really good.

The pinstripe was pointless, it just gave dirt a spot to build up at. Check out the following links for a bunch of pictures:

I still have the other side to do, and, even though it's impossible to tell, there's still some residue on the trunk from the badge. It's coming along very well, however. :D 8)
