Painting molding?

I am about to get a 90 325 IS from my uncle and it needs to be painted, I've seen a lot of "monotoned" e30's on this board and I was wondering if if was because you painted all the molding, took it off, got a body kit, or what? I've searched for a while and I wasn't able to find anything about this. Thanks.

some people paint the moldings, using a paint with a flex agent added. Other people (AndreNY I think?) actually removed and filled the body where the moldings were...
