    Hood and trunk lid weights

How much does the stock 325i hood and trunk lid weigh? The reason I ask is I'm probably going to get a respray this summer, and I was looking at IE's fiberglass hood and trunk lid. The hood weights 14lbs, and the trunk lid weighs 6 lbs. Would the weight loss be substantial and worth the money? Also, how much do VIS cf hoods weigh?

Last I knew IE's fiberglass panels were designed to be pinned in place. They dont use the factory latches and such. These are race only type of parts.

IE may or may not make/sell a hood that uses the latches.

I was on the site the other day. I think they have one regualr figerglass hood using the normal latches, and then the race hood is lighter and uses the pins.

i think the stock hoods on our E30's weigh around 42 pounds. but im not quite sure. and just for your information, when you paint a fiberglass/CF hood the paint wont look nearly as nice as it would on a metal hood, just with my experience it didnt. anybody else agree?

Dude. stop kidding around. I know you're going to be paying $$$$$ for college next year and shit, so don't be throwing down no money for fiberglass.

Plus, if you drive in college (after next year), but friend recommended not to get a new paint job. Dents or scratches will ruin your day and are all too common on campus.

Save your $$, and wait until after.....or at least until you have your own place with garage or car port.

            IE makes 2 fiberglass hoods:

425 bucks gets you a 20lbs hood using stock mounting points
225 bucks gets you a 16lbs hood using pins.

I would love to get one of these, but i dont like the look of pins and i dont like to spend 425 on a new hood.

I've seen painted CF hoods that look factory...it just depends on the preparation
