Q: how to clean filthy bottlecaps?

My bottlecaps do not appear to have been cleaned in 19 years. I want to take them off the car and give them a scrubbing & a coat of wax. Any advice?

BMW wheel cleaner and wheel brush - two applications, let soak about 15 mins. before scrubbing, dry and apply Klasse All-In-One.

      Step 1, remove bottlecaps
      Step 2, trash bottlecaps

      Done!

HAHA, no seriously ^^^ that should work...

I use Wheel Brite, which is wheel acid and will clean anything off a wheel. However, abusing it will ruin a finish so you have to be careful about how you apply it and how long you let it sit.

OK, so I tried lots of soaking and scrubbing with Griot's Garage wheel cleaner that I already had, and it did squat. Didn't cut through that black crap on the inside of the wheel at all. Are the products in the posts above that much stronger? Did I mention that the black stuff is really stuck on there in a big way?

I've used Ajax. It's HARD on the finish, but I was willing to chance it after little else worked. It looked WAY better, and if you're too aggressive....well, repainting them isn't very hard.

Brake dust wont come off once its caked on like that. You can sand it off and thats about it.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but I've been using mineral spirits to bring my 14 inch weaves back to life. They were so dirty they were brown and black. I basically I had them dismounted from tires and I sat them down. Sprayed simple green on it. Uses a tooth brush in the crevices. Sprayed more simple green. Waited. Hit them with a pressure washer. Then some mineral spirits. Works farely well but I still have little specks of black everywhere.

All in all. You should just sand them down. Clean with mineral spirits. Repaint. Done.
Caps are not pretty or in demand so I would spend a good deal of time with them when people are practically giving their sets away. You could probably find 4 spares on eBay if you look hard enough or on the forums.
