    Recommended brightness for HID kit

    I'm looking and picking up an HID kit but am unsure which bulbs will work best. I remember seeing a thread about someone's housings melting because of the bulbs being too hot but I couldn't find it when I searched. Can you guys help me out?

    Which bulbs will work best? Wha?

    Order a reputable kit with your bulb size (9006 or H1, US or Euro ellips), order the color temp you want, and voila.

      Any bulb will be enough to melt the housings if the glass touches the plastic housing (which is what happened to Cary). Just get the color temp that you like in the type of bulb that fits in the housing.... and don't hot glue them in.

        do not buy HID's unless you have elips or you will blind all the other drivers.

          Yes, DONT get hid with the H4s. only with either US or euro ellips.

          Unless there is direct contact I dont see how any reputable bulb would damage the housings. My HIDs (both kits) run a LOT cooler than the halogen. The 6000k kit the glass was cool but the UV radiation would heat your hand up for about 40 feet. The 4100k kit does create some warmth but nowhere near the H1 halogen.

          I have the 4100, its the brightest kit I have seen at about 3800 lmens. The 5200 is about 3200 lumens, 6000 is about 2800, and the 7000 is about 2400, and anything higher is just a 7000k bulb tinted.

          4100 = white 5200=white/blue 6000=white/purple 7000=purple.

          Now everyones color temps vary a little, go off the color the bulb puts out.

          4100 is far birghter but doesnt look like HID 10 seconds after you turn them on. They lose all color. The rest give the HID look.

            Thanks for the color description Ryan deffinately cleared up that question for me. I have euro ellips so no worry's about me blinding fellow drivers.

              What do some of the kits run ($) to add/convert euro ellips to HID?

                It's around 300 for kits on ebay. When my buddy installed one of them on his '88 911 I was a little skeptical of the quality, but they look great. Deffinatly light up everything especially since there are none projection headlights.

                  I too would be a little skeptical of Ebay kits, how about prices or quality from some of you guys that have bought these from other sources?

                    misterjung was about 400 for a Hella ballasted kit and rebased bulbs. It worked just fine but was a bit crude.

                    I now have the Polarion kit, fit and finish is much better and the bulb bases are solid plastic all the way to the glass. Thier kits run about 500. They use phillips kits basically.

                      I've the Hella kit 4100k and you'll see any difference compared to an halogen bulb even after several min's and the light output is enormous :shock:
