    M42 valve cover

My 318is' valve cover is pretty nasty. I'd like to pull it off and refinish it, but can I do so without having to buy a new gasket? this is probably a dumb question, just curious if i can do this tomorrow w/o a trip to the parts store.

When you pull the valve cover the gasket will most likely disintergrate. Your stuck buying a new and I would even if it doesn't come apart. They are fairly inexpensive, for the m20 I think mine was $12.00.

The m42's gasket is a different case. I bought a new one for $40 from the dealer. That includes the valve cover gasket and 4 rubber rings that go around the openings where the plug wires enter through.
