    Newb

Ok so I've been on here a lil while now, fairly new to the E30 scene. I can understand the obsession with euro parts but I just can't tell the difference between them. Mainly I hear a lot of talk about euro bumpers, and euro grils. From the pics I've seen I can't see any difference between them and the American ones. Can someone please post comparison pics?

    Dude, don't be lazy.

There are plenty of pics of both all over this site. Search and you will find em.

Who was it who's sig is a drawing of both euro grills and US grills. Basically the grills, the euro goes across the top of the light, where as the us has a gap on top where the lights are. Searching will yield pictures and everything.

I'm not being lazy I've seen both tons of times I just don't notice the difference, thanks for the diagram on the grill I get it now. You have to admit, pretty subtle difference. Still don't see it in the bumper besides the plate holder.

US bumpers are massive ugly beasts.
                Euros are not.

euro bumpers are a lot smaller and skinnier! back in the day cars had to have what are called 5mph bumpers in the usa. that is why we got stuck with these beasts! i just read about this some where but i don't remember where. maybe it was the bmwcca mag... that's why 2002's have such huge bumpers as well. if you really want to see the difference between a euro bumper and a us bumper check out the pictures of 02's with the differing bumpers.

"On April 9, 1971, the agency issued its first passenger car bumper standard -- Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 215, "Exterior Protection," which became effective on September 1, 1972. This standard called for passenger cars, beginning with model year (MY) 1973, to withstand 5 mph front and 2 mph rear impacts against a perpendicular barrier without damage to certain safety-related components such as headlamps and fuel systems."

"49 CFR Part 581, "The bumper standard," prescribes performance requirements for passenger cars in low-speed front and rear collisions. It applies to front and rear bumpers on passenger cars to prevent the damage to the car body and safety related equipment at barrier impact speeds of 2 mph across the full width and 1 mph on the corners. This is equivalent to a 5 mph crash into a parked vehicle of the same weight. The standard requires protection in the region 16 to 20 inches above the road surface, and the manufacturer can provide the protection by any means it wants. For example, some vehicles do not have a solid bumper across the vehicle, but meet the standard by strategically placed bumper guards and corner guards."

Do you have a plastic bumper car? If you don't go look at the giant plastic shrouded pieces of crap hanging from either side of your car and then imagine same car with sleek looking skinny little chrome bumpers that actually fit into the body lines of the car; then tuck your db's and start saving your cash.

Look at how huge and ugly my front bumper is. then scroll up and look at the chrome euro bumper. If you can't see it then you're lucky... you won't be wishing you had $400 to spend on bumpers.
