    I just replaced mine today. When I yanked, the knob came off but left the plastic insert on the shifter. Crappy 1984 plastic, just didn't wanna let go. Vice-Grips to the rescue!

    Its not possible to actually damage the shift linkage or anything by pulling on the knob really hard (whether in gear or not), correct?

    Same thing happened to me on my brother's old E30. I wish I could be so lucky. My solution: Replace the stock shifter with something better and avoid the whole problem.

    let it come off on its own when you power shift from 3rd to 4th

    happened to me me I threw it in 4th and hand the shift knob stuck to my hand.

    I was driving with my buddy and we both thought it was quite funny actually.

    Place duct-taped channel lock pliers around the lever below the knob. Use a slide hammer with the nut under the jaws of the pliers and pull the hammer weight upward. Pop.

    Actually, I just made that up. Let me know if it works; I need to swap a shift knob and my nuts are still swollen up from R&Ring my wheel bearings.
