Early chassis under steering wheel alternatives?

Ok so the plastic/cardboard gets crumbly but seriously 85 dollars for the piece? Granted I didn't pay that for em but come now.

Has anyone considered making them out of Kevlar or CF or FG? What I am talking about is the early knee board. I don't like the late model style either so please don't mention that as an alternative please.

yeah i bought a new one and the materials are way different than the old pieces I had laying around. Rather disappointed in a few of the "New" pieces i've purchased.

But still, would you rather spend "85 bucks" (I know that's not what we spend) or spend 4 hours laying up FG and then figuring out how to make it look good...

We Jay I was hoping that maybe some had taken the time to laying up a mold for one, granted I just bought two for the M's but for the dollar amount doing an CF or Kevlar one would be nice as it will not break so easily.

Hope the material will match the dash but doubting it will. Hey did you get the firewall plug I sent you?

I had to read the topic twice to figure out what the heck you were talking about :)

$85 is not a bad price for a brand new oem piece though, I wonder if it's the same material as they use for the dash/front/rear consoles now.

I purchased a new one and found the quality to be much better than my old one that was sagging like a pensioners tits.

@Greg: I have not seen the firewall plug - you sent it to HMS, no? I'll look around for it on Thursday.

@Jean: No, it's not the same material, and the new front consoles are still coming with the old material. At least, the one I bought is made of the same material that all the other ones have been.

Here is a pic of the "New" knee panel. It's obviously not fully installed, but you can see around the edges how it's not very well finished. It's like the blade they used to cut the edges was dull. I guess it could be that the "old" ones that we're all replacing have been worn so that the edges aren't rough.

Yes it went to HMS in a US postal mailer bag.

Ah I see the interior is inplace now, what is left?

I'll ask the guys, they probably set it aside in a weird place.

VSR is picking it up any day now to do center section and stromung muffler, then I need to tighten one suspension nut, refab the seat brackets (recaros are too high), fab a heat shield, install a stereo, then nut and bolt the whole car.

Then sort it and drive it.

I did low sliders on my SRD and LS seats. I need to order my VSR center section for the red M3. You need to post a clip after you have the exhaust all fabbed.

The VSR/Stromung sound good with a S14 so I could imagine how well it will sound with a bigger displacement engine. What exhaust headers/manifolds did you use?
