    Electric window issue

Today randomly when I got home and went to roll up my windows my passenger window is unresponsive.

I have always been told that the switches are prone to going bad so the first thing I did was take my driver side switch and throw on it and it still wouldn't work. Now mind you it works great on the drivers side.

I also checked the breaker and its good, as I said the drivers side works as it should.

What is my next step of troubleshooting here?

I have not checked fuses since the drivers side works, do I need to? Are they individually fused?

    No, not individually fused.

Likely a bad regulator, but do you wanna diagnose it properly, or just say fuck it and go buy new(er?) parts?

    What car you got?

I would like to diagnose it properly so I can learn the car better as well as know what i replace will take care of it.

I saw on one of the threads on the bottom of the page a guy with a similar issue talking about a relay going bad behind the "cubby", any idea what he's talking about there? Whats the Cubby?

      Its an 86' 325e

No, no relays in the window system. 2 or 6 switches, 2 or 4 motors, normal "rest on ground" voltage reversal wiring, same as damn near every manufacturer since the beginning of time. Some newer stuff is weird, and most manufacturers started using relays at some point, but the same basics apply.

First, go get your manual. www.wedophones.com has it under "automotive, BMW"

The most common cause of a dead window is the switch, but you already ruled that out.

You might have a broken wire, as both must be intact for the motor to work, but that is not common: BMW wire quality is one of the main reasons I love BMW.

The next most common failure of a window is the mechanism wearing out and "jamming" the worm drive. Generally, this applies only to the early cars, some 1988 and earlier. New regulators are much better designed, generally pretty bullet-proof.

Sounds like the regulator is a no go. I'm willing to lend a hand and tools at any point in time. I've done this a couple times. :D

Luke, your .gifs still piss me off. Love ya (in a non gay way).

Thanks for your help! I will check it out and let ya know how it goes.

If the wormdrive is jammed will it still let me use the allen crank? Cause thats been working for now.

Yeah, kinda...cause when you are cranking it, the center doesn't stay in the same place...mine bound so hard I drove home in the damn rain with the window halfway down.

In the next few weeks I am gonna do late model swap on mine. Should be fairly straightforward, dunno.

any progress on that? my drivers window is the same way now for a couple months. been using and allen to crank it, but now ive got it stripped so I cant do that anymore...

new regulators are too expensive,I'll probably grab a junkyard one and swap it in. assuming this is the issue.
