i've got my door panels off to lube the locking mechanisms & install some black door pulls & map pockets, and i figured while they're out i should tackle this as well since it bugs me. on both sides the windows stop with about 1/2-1 inch of glass still above the seal. how do i adjust the brackets/sliders so they go all the way down? it's annoying when i try to put my arm on the window sill.

Yeah it bugs the hell out of me, too. I have no idea if it's even possible. It's probably adjustable, but I have a feeling that if you actually manage to lower it enough, it won't go up all the way when you try to close it.
I'm just guessing, though.

REVIVE:
I have this issue, I've got the ancient style regulators on my 87. Any luck with this? Please? It's irritating as hell. I've loosened all of my adjustments and can't get it to go down any more. Also, the window grinds at the bottom. Are the stops electrical or mechanical?Originally posted by george gravesIf people keep quoting me in their sig, I'm going to burn this motherfucker down.

Iirc the early style don't go down all the way, and the later ones do.
I know on my 88 m3 they stick up a bit and on my 92 cab the go all the way down. Different regulator styles.Originally posted by codyep3I hope to Christ you have looks going for you, because you sure as fuck don't have any intelligence.

I took the whole thing apart today, and it looks like if you chopped 1/4"-1/2" off the bottom of the glass, you'd still get enough travel to close fully and drop the window all the way into the door. There's an E30 out at the scrapyard with driver's side glass that I may experiment with for this. I need a passenger window motor off the thing anyway.Originally posted by george gravesIf people keep quoting me in their sig, I'm going to burn this motherfucker down.

Cars have safety tempered glass and any attempt at cutting them and they will immediately shatter into a thousand little pieces.

Even if you are a gigantic fuckwit, you do happen to be correct.
I think I'll get the glass shop next door to do a one-off real cheap like for me, they've got a tempering furnace that'll take a door window.Originally posted by george gravesIf people keep quoting me in their sig, I'm going to burn this motherfucker down.

If you are so set on accomplishing this don't you think it would be easier and more doable to relocate the mounting on the regulator as opposed to trimming your tempered glass? :loco:

Everbody just hold your horses, there is a way to adjust for this (at least a little) without cutting the glass. This is a common issue with the 2002 also and I at one time found a DIY on this but I don't remember where.
In the bottom of the door interior there is a stop that prevents the window from going down too far. It is adjustable to a point but you can slot the holes it or remove a spacer (I don't remember which) so that the window will retract further. You dont want the window to retract below the seals on the top of the door or they will rattle in the guides when you have them all the way down.

Sorry, I don't really remember. I'm as old as dirt and it was some years ago that I did this. I do remember that there was a white nylon or teflon portion that either the bottom of the window contacted or one of the arms on the mechanism (I'm thinking its the latter). This was on a '91 318is, don't know if you car's the same.
