Some sort of goo on seats

I've finally started messing with the M3 (the E30, not the E46). The seats have some sort of weird goo on them where the back contacts the bottom. The best comparison I've got for it is that it feels kind of like epoxy glue without the hardener added.

Has anyone encountered this? Any ideas for getting this crap off? It's stuck on there pretty well and it isn't responding very easily. My next step is xylene.

FWIW, xylene did not damage the seats and it ate that crap right up. I conditioned them immediately, however.
